Organ Scholarship 2024

Posted on: Thursday 29th February 2024

St Paul’s Knightsbridge is offering an Organ Scholarship for the 2024-25 academic year.

Deadline for applications: 4pm on 25th March 2024.

St Paul’s Knightsbridge is an Anglican parish church of the high church tradition in Belgravia, London. Its liturgical style is formal and dignified, and along with thoughtful preaching, a sensitive liturgical programme of music has always been an important part of its witness. The church is committed to maintaining the very highest standards in its offering of worship to God. The repertoire for regular services and special events is eclectic and the congregation is used to music in a wide variety of styles from all centuries down to the present day. The church is particularly well-known for its creative use of music in both liturgical and non-liturgical settings.

St Paul’s is seeking to appoint an Organ Scholar for the academic year 2024-25 (September-August). Key duties will include:

  • assisting the Assistant Director of Music and sometimes playing the organ at the Sunday 11am Solemn Eucharist service;
  • assisting the Director of Music and occasionally directing the Choir at the Sunday 11am Solemn Eucharist service (as appropriate);
  • playing the organ and directing the Choral Scholars for the mid-week service on Thursday evenings;
  • writing music notes to be included in the order of service for the Sunday 11am Solemn Eucharist service; and
  • assisting the Director of Music with occasional administrative tasks as appropriate.

This is a mentorship role, and as such there will be opportunities for mentorship from the professional music staff, as appropriate. In addition to the fine Father Willis organ, the Organ Scholar will also have some access to the church’s other musical resources, including the Steinway Model D piano.

We envisage that the organ scholar will be either a current university/conservatoire students (undergraduate or postgraduate), or a very recent graduate. In special circumstances it may be possible to appoint a gap-year student to the position.

The scholarship value will be £5,000, paid in three instalments.

To apply, please send a cover letter, a CV, and a short recording to pa@spkb.org by 4pm on 25th March 2024. Auditions will be scheduled subsequently.
