Liturgy Scholarships

St Paul’s Knightsbridge is offering two brand new Liturgy Scholarships for the academic year 2022-23.

Application deadline: 4th November 2022

St Paul’s Knightsbridge is an Anglican parish church of the high church tradition in Belgravia, London. Its liturgical style is formal and dignified, and along with thoughtful preaching, a sensitive liturgical programme of music has always been an important part of its witness. The church is committed to maintaining the very highest standards in its offering of worship to God, and is currently establishing a new mid-week service on Thursday evenings, providing an opportunity to explore new forms of liturgy.

The Scholars will immerse themselves in the liturgical tradition of St Paul’s Knightsbridge, and will help to develop that tradition in our own time. They will work closely with the clergy, head server, and music team to explore the ‘why?’ and the ‘how?’ of liturgical worship, both the more formal Eucharistic worship on Sunday mornings and traditional pastoral offices, and also and in other more experimental liturgies. This immersion will take the form of practical involvement in serving and resourcing liturgy, the study of the history and theology of liturgy, and the design and execution of new liturgies.

Each of our scholarships is in the sum of £1,500 p.a.; however, this relatively small sum betokens an expectation that our scholars will benefit in many other ways, socially, intellectually, spiritually, by being part of a gregarious, lively and healthy central London congregation.

These Scholarships will suit candidates with an interest in deepening their understanding of and engagement with high church liturgy in the Anglican tradition. They may particularly suit those who have previously served as Chapel Clerks or equivalent, and who would like to continue their church involvement in a thoughtful, intellectually rigorous setting.

It is envisaged that Scholars will be available for regular Sunday morning serving duties and for a new weekday liturgy.

An informal conversation about the scholarships may be arranged by emailing Katja Behrens at the Parish Office (katja@spkb.org).

A Letter of Application accompanied by a Curriculum Vitae and contact details of a referee should be sent by email to Katja Behrens (katja@spkb.org) by 5pm on Friday 4th November 2022.
