The Programme

Morning Walk & Talk:

In the mornings, at 10:00, we will meet at the Lutheran church (12 Apostles) close to Wittenberplatz (about 10-15m walk, or one stop on the Metro for those who prefer not to walk), for Morning Prayer and a reflection to set up the second half of the morning. After coffee, we will travel together to the centre of Berlin for a walking exploration of two important hubs, the Topographie des Terrors and the Brandenburg Gate/Holocaust Memorial.

Lunch:

You can choose where to have lunch – from a street-side currywurst snack to a bistrot or even a smarter restaurant!

Afternoons:

Afternoons are completely free until the early evening Eucharist. However, each day there will be an informal guided walk/visit with Roland Brunner. And the programme includes other suggested visits locally – so you can pick something that interests you and for which you are physically suited!

Evenings:

Each evening, we will get ready in our hotels, then gather for the Eucharist – and then walk or travel straight on to dinner together. We have chosen two contrasted restaurants – both serving local food.

Sunday:

On Sunday, we will attend the morning service at Berlin’s Lutheran Cathedral. It is the Feast of Pentecost (Pfingsten, in German), which is a great feast, particularly on the Continent. The Cathedral offers simultaneous translation through headsets, which will be supplied!  And afterwards, we will return to our base in Wittenberplatz for lunch at the popular Grenander restaurant.

Please note that you may arrive as early or as late on Thursday 17th May as you wish – BUT the programme begins at 10:00 on Friday 18th and concludes after lunch on the Sunday. If you wish to join the trip, please don’t ask to arrive late or leave early!

Flights

Flights to Berlin are frequent and cheap. You need to arrange to fly in on Thursday 17th to be ready for a morning start on the Friday – Friday morning flights will arrive too late.  The city is served by Easyjet to Schönefeld Airport (SXF) and British Airways to Tegel Airport (TXL).  Tegel is closer to the centre.

Accommodation

Hotels and Neighbourhood:

For a variety of reasons, we have chosen Wittenbergplatz as our hub. The area is in the old West of Berlin and is close to the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche and Kurfürstendamm, the old West shopping boulevard (including Ka De We, Berlin’s closest equivalent to Harrods!).

As ever, we invite you to book your own accommodation. On the square or nearby are numerous hotels, such as:

  • Mercure (make sure you select the one at Wittenbergplatz, not the other nearby!)
  • Crowne Plaza Berlin City Centre,
  • Ibis and Ibis Budget, Kurfürstendamm
  • or any other hotel in the area.

Full details of the programme and ground transportation in Berlin will be sent to you after you’ve registered your interest.
